Obituary

Velma V. Cox, born September 3, 1937, in Ray County, passed away on November 2, 2026.

“

She was especially known for her fried apple pies, a gift from her kitchen that surely brought comfort and delight to many.

Velma lived a life shaped by faith, family, and the work of her hands. A member of The Church Of God, she centered her life on God, and that devotion touched nearly everything she did. Almost every hobby she loved became a way to serve church fundraisers and bless others. She was a school teacher and also did carpenter work, bringing both care and skill to the tasks before her. Crafty by nature, Velma put her heart into everything she did.

She found joy in sewing, gardening, cooking, architecture, painting, and drawing house plans. She was especially known for her fried apple pies, a gift from her kitchen that surely brought comfort and delight to many. Whether she was making something beautiful, planning a home on paper, tending a garden, or preparing food for those she loved, Velma’s life reflected warmth, purpose, and generosity. Above all, she loved her family.

She is survived by her children, Gregory Cox and his wife Sherrie, Ronald Cox and his wife Linda, Marcie Green, and Karren Newberry and her husband Todd; by her brother, Johnny Walker; and by her grandchildren, Ginger Akins, JL Green and his wife Victoria, Tiffany Lanzilotta and her husband Rick, Kris Newberry and his wife Mindy, Joshua Newberry and his wife Joanna, Kolby Cox, Ashley Jones and her husband Bryan,Charity Cox and J. Eddmonds, and Paige Cox. She is also survived by 12 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great Great Grandchildren. The family she cherished so deeply remains part of the living legacy of her love, faith, and example.

Velma was preceded in death by her father, Oliver John, and her mother, Annie Brady Hook; by her husband, Lester Cox; by her sisters, Stella Price and Pearl Green; by her son-in-law, Leamon Green; and by her grandson, Scott Akins. Their memories remain bound to hers in the story of a life well lived and deeply treasured.
