Obituary

James Andrew Phipps Sr. walked into the arms of Jesus on October 21, 2021.  He was born July 30, 1937 in Crossville, Tennessee to Joe and Annie Phipps.

James is survived by his daughter Karen Hunter of Winston-Salem, NC, grandchildren James Andrew Phipps III, Samantha Phipps, Nichole Emerson, Ray Phipps, Frank Phipps, Sam Phipps, and seven great grandchildren, sister-in-law Margot Phipps and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Mauvalene and son James Andrew Jr. along with his brothers, John H, Clarence, Billie, and Bobby.

James loved Jesus, was a Special Forces Green Beret who served his country for 21 years, a husband who never forgot chivalry, a dad who deeply loved his kids, a brother who had a bond that was like no other with all four brothers, a member of Bethlehem Baptist church who served well and was patriarch to the rest of the family.

If you know James, you know he had a couple of passions, growing a big garden and raising his American flag up each morning. He had a quiet spirit but a huge servant's heart.  You could rely on him to get things done well and with precision.

Many enjoyed the fruits of his labor, particularly his candy that he made each year.  Every year he would say that he was retiring and the candy making business was under new management.  We all knew better.  He would be right back in the kitchen making it the following year.  However, today we would like to say that James has officially retired and it is now under new management. His legacy lives on.

Now in heaven with his wife of 64 years, his son, and other family, there is no more sickness. The circle of brothers is  back together forever.

Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, Brother-in-law, Friend—you are missed and are so loved.

Well done my good and faithful servant!

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at 7pm at Hood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5pm-7pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in East TN Veterans Cemetery.
